What is an arc flash?
An arc flash is a dangerous electrical phenomenon that can occur when an electrical circuit is interrupted or when there is a fault in the system. In short, an arc flash is an explosion of light and heat that can be extremely hazardous – and in the worst cases, deadly – to workers nearby. An arc flash occurs when energy is released very quickly from an electrical system. This energy can generate temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun. In addition to the heat, an arc flash can create a shockwave and propel molten metal, posing serious risks of burns, injuries, or fatalities. The energy released during an arc flash is measured in cal/cm², and it is crucial that personal protective equipment (PPE) is rated to withstand the expected energy level. Using PPE that matches the energy level ensures maximum protection and reduces the risk of injury. When in doubt, always consult an expert – at ccbsafety, experienced professionals are ready to help assess the appropriate safety measures and PPE for your situation.
WHERE AND WHY DO ARC FLASH INCIDENTS OCCUR?
Arc flash incidents can happen in many settings, including industrial plants, manufacturing facilities, construction sites, power stations, commercial buildings, and offshore platforms. They can result from various factors, such as equipment failure, improper use of electrical equipment, accidental contact with live components, or inadequate maintenance of electrical systems. Due to the severe risks associated with arc flashes – including burns, injuries, and fatalities – it is essential that workers who may be exposed receive thorough training in safety procedures and always use appropriate personal protective equipment. Proper precautions not only protect employees but also ensure the safe and efficient operation of electrical systems.
WHEN DO YOU NEED ARC FLASH PROTECTIVE WORKWEAR?
When you or your employees work on or near electrical equipment that could cause an arc flash, workwear with arc flash protective properties is essential for safety. The required level of protection depends on the potential energy of the equipment and the distance between the worker and the equipment. In general, employees within the arc flash boundary – the distance at which a person could receive a second-degree burn from an arc flash – should wear appropriate PPE to protect against the heat and electrical energy released during an arc flash incident.
