EMPLOYER'S RESPONSIBILITY FOR DUST PROTECTION
In Denmark, employers have a legal responsibility to ensure that employees working in dusty environments are properly protected. According to the regulations of the Danish Working Environment Authority (Arbejdstilsynet), the employer must assess the risk of dust exposure and ensure that the necessary safety measures are in place.
This includes:
- Identifying tasks and areas with a dust risk.
- Providing correct personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, coveralls, gloves, and eye protection.
- Instructing and training employees in the correct use of the equipment.
- Ensuring that the workplace complies with exposure limits for dust, including silica dust and asbestos.
- Maintaining and replacing equipment as needed.
These requirements apply specifically in Denmark, but similar regulations exist in most other countries. International standards and national authorities in the EU, US, UK, and other regions often impose similar requirements for risk assessment, exposure limits, and proper use of PPE.

1. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION – MASKS AND FILTERS
Respiratory protection is your absolute most important barrier against harmful dust and the long-term lung damage it can cause. To achieve real safety, the mask must be carefully selected based on the nature of the task and the specific hazard level of the dust, as incorrect equipment can provide a dangerous and false sense of security.
The half mask covers the nose and mouth and is the preferred choice for most construction tasks with moderate dust exposure. It is lightweight, flexible, and easy to combine with other safety equipment. The full-face mask, on the other hand, covers the entire face and is necessary during extreme dust concentrations or when there is a risk of eye irritation. It offers a significantly higher level of protection and ensures that hazardous particles never come into direct contact with facial skin or eyes.
The choice of mask depends on the dust type and concentration:
- Filtering facepieces (Disposable dust masks): Typically divided into FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3 classes. For fine dust and harmful particles, a minimum of FFP2 is recommended, while FFP3 provides the highest level of protection.
- Half and full-face masks: Reusable masks with replaceable filters (e.g., P3 filters). They fit tighter against the face than disposable masks.
- Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR): A battery-powered blower delivers filtered air into a hood or mask. Ideal for prolonged work or users with beards.
Important: Always remember to perform a "fit check" when putting on your mask. If air escapes around the nose or cheeks, the mask will not provide the promised protection.

2. COVERALLS AND BODY PROTECTION
In addition to respiratory protection, body protection is essential, as dust is not only a risk to the lungs. Hazardous particles can severely irritate the skin and settle into your everyday clothing, risking transporting contamination back home to your car or personal home.
Protective coveralls are categorized according to their tightness and resistance:
- Type 5: This certification ensures that the coverall is tested against airborne solid particles (dust and powder). It is your primary defense against fine dust penetrating the fabric.
- Type 6: Protects against limited liquid splashes and chemical mists. It is ideal if the work involves slightly damp environments or flying particles.
Choosing the right type of coverall:
The choice between disposable coveralls and reusable coveralls depends on the frequency of the work. Disposable coveralls are highly practical and hygienic for short-term or heavily soiled tasks, as they are simply discarded after use. Reusable coveralls, on the other hand, are a more economical and environmentally friendly solution for regular tasks, provided they are washed correctly and maintain their protective properties.
3. HAND PROTECTION – GLOVES
In many working environments, hands are exposed to dust and fine particles, presenting a significant risk to employee health. Continuous contact can lead to dryness, irritation, and, in worst-case scenarios, allergic reactions or skin contamination. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully match the choice of protective gloves to the specific task and material properties:
- Nitrile: The preferred choice for everything from heavier dust work like demolition and sanding to more precise tasks in healthcare, cleaning, and offshore. Nitrile is extremely durable and puncture-resistant, providing effective protection against both particles and chemicals without the risk of latex allergies. To optimize safety, diamond-textured variants are available to ensure a superior grip on tools and materials in all working conditions.
- Latex: Ideal for tasks requiring maximum precision and dexterity. It is highly elastic and fits snugly against the skin, though one should be aware of the risk of developing allergies with prolonged use.
- Vinyl: Suitable for lighter, short-term tasks where dust exposure is minimal. As vinyl is less elastic and not as durable, it should primarily be used for tasks without mechanical stress where quick replacement is required.
For tasks like sanding or handling dusty construction materials, striking a balance between durability and mobility is essential. An optimal solution often involves durable gloves with high dexterity, as they effectively block particle penetration while ensuring the necessary freedom of movement. Choosing the right material not only protects the skin here and now, but also prevents long-term occupational injuries caused by particle exposure.
4. EYE PROTECTION – GLASSES AND GOGGLES
When it comes to workplace safety, eyes are one of our most vulnerable areas. Many make the mistake of thinking that regular glasses provide sufficient protection, but the truth is that dust easily finds its way behind the lenses, which can cause irritation, inflammation, or, in the worst case, corneal scratches.
Choosing the right equipment is therefore crucial:
- Safety glasses: Suitable for tasks with coarse dust, where the risk primarily comes from the front.
- Safety goggles: Necessary in environments with very fine dust or when working overhead. They fit completely flush against the face and create an effective barrier that seals the eye area entirely, preventing particles from entering from the sides or bottom.

6. PREVENTION – MINIMIZE DUST BEFORE IT OCCURS

Although it is possible to significantly limit the amount of airborne particles, these measures must never stand alone or lead to the omission of personal protective equipment (PPE).
To minimize dust generation, the following methods should be integrated into planning:
- Choose materials with low dust content: There is a significant difference in how much dust different types of wood, concrete, and insulation generate. By selecting the least dusty options, potential exposure is reduced right from the start.
- Use pre-treatment or dampening: Moistening dusty materials is an effective technique to keep particles down, limiting the amount of airborne dust during processing.
- Effective extraction and ventilation: Local exhaust ventilation captures dust before it spreads into the room, ensuring a cleaner zone around each employee.
- Plan working methods: Sanding, cutting, and demolition should always be carried out with a focus on minimal spread – e.g., by consistently using vacuum attachments on power tools or physically screening off the area.

Preventive measures can make work more efficient and improve the indoor climate, but they rarely eliminate all risks. Therefore, the use of correct personal protective equipment must always be maintained.
